What Remote Work Options Are There for Nutrition Professionals?

Although the space for remote practice has been well established in multiple fields, it is an emerging area within nutrition. Especially over the last 18 months, which definitely brought to light the number of opportunities that exist for Nutrition Professionals to work remotely. Working remotely has a wealth of advantages from being able to work flexibly and having more control over your working hours, to greater productivity and morale (1). Of course, this depends on each person and their preferred work environment and routine. The opportunities for teleworking are expanding, so read on if you are looking for inspiration for working remotely as a Nutrition Professional.

Telehealth and Online Coaching

Working and interacting with clients/patients is very important in the field of nutrition. This can be made possible through telehealth and online coaching! In fact, it also enhances accessibility for those who may otherwise struggle to travel for consultations, or for those who feel more comfortable speaking with a health professional from the comfort of their own home.

Consultancy and Project Work:

Many brands will often reach out to Nutrition Professionals to help with a variety of projects. Consultancy work may include: product development, marketing, recipe development, resource creation or providing an expert opinion. This area has potential for flexible and remote work.

Nutrition Writing:

News outlets, blogs, industry publications and other online spaces require evidence-based articles and informative documents written by Nutrition Professionals. These are a great form of online work for those who enjoy writing and nutrition communication.

Online Courses:

If there is one thing we have learnt from this year, it is how many different courses and educational sessions can be hosted online. Developing these courses is another great online work option for Nutrition Professionals. These can range from online groups, live and pre-recorded courses, online webinars, lectures and workplace wellness webinars for companies.

Recipe Analysis and Creation:

We couldn’t discuss nutrition careers without discussing recipe development. Many brands, magazines, catering companies, care providers, schools, bloggers (etc.) enlist Nutrition Professionals to aid with this process and to create and analyse recipes, menus and meal plans.

Media and Social Media Campaigns:

With many Nutrition Professionals and brands taking advantage of the marketing and promotion that comes with using social media, there is the opportunity to work and assist with different campaigns and projects. It provides a great space for remote work and at the front line of evolving trends within the industry. This work can either be public facing or in the background of managing a media or social media campaign related to nutrition. Of course, it is very important to follow relevant legislation when it comes to nutrition claims and related promotions.

Product Development:

The process of manufacturing products requires the assistance of Nutrition Professionals before being brought to market. This includes supplement development advising on the creation of food and drink products, food labelling, reformulation, allergens and food safety (2).

As you can see from the opportunities listed above, there are many possibilities for working remotely as a Nutrition Professional, and this list is by no means exhaustive!
